It is better to get yourself a method book (along with a CD) before you go through the resources on the net. It will give you a better understanding of the basics and fingering.
References :
In all honesty you can't. You can't because how do you know if you are doing it wrong? How do you know how to extend off of what the online teaches?
You really need to hire a private teacher. There are no shortcuts to learning the right way to play an instrument. You need someone to teach you the theory, technique and nuances of pieces. You can't get that from a video course "off line" on a computer.
References :
I'm just like you. I've always been able to write songs in my head, but I have never known how to translate it onto paper or an instrument. I am now finally learning piano, at the age of 20. And it is hard, but not insurmountable.

I've heard that it's easier to do when you are younger and haven't already developed naturally bad habits that can hinder your playing. However, this can be overcome. You just have to practice. Every day. Preferably for at least an hour. Even if you get bored. Just keep going. Repetition develops the muscle memory that will become your best friend.

Also, I recommend getting a teacher. He/she will be able to give you pointers and will also keep you on track by helping you set goals for yourself.
References :
My own experience and the things I've learned

Forget the net. Try your local music shop and ask about their range of theory workbooks. These are graded from Beginner (Gr 1) upwards. It is quite possible to teach yourself music theory, with the right workbooks. (A lot of people do.) They generally discuss and describe the point, then ask you questions. They don't often include the answers, but all you have to do is check up on the text you have just read. If you work consistently you could have really excellent, high level music reading skills in a year. That is around Grade 3. After that the courses get into harmony, history and general knowledge. Most people don't need to go that far.

As you learn new things, look for them in the music you are playing/singing at the time. That way it will make a lot more sense, as you can see what it is saying. A sheet of music is basically a set of instructions that tell you how to turn the page into musical sound. Not much point in learning the instructions if you can't make them work for you!

Sorry, there is no easy way to do it. You might even get fascinated with the stuff and be studying for years. In some places, you can do exams up to Diploma Level. You would have to check out what music examining body there was in your country. England, Australia and NZ have one. Other countries often use one of these systems.
References :
Get a good teacher and or a good series of self-teaching books. You might also try Piano for Dummies. It's not that hard if you have the patience to get past the beginners stuff because it can really bog you down when you first start. But with diligence and practice you'll do fine!

Good luck!
